☼ LIMA TOP ATTRACTIONS

Among the most popular and recommended LIMAs tours are those that take visitors on a boat ride to the floating Uros Islands. These islands are literally made from the tortora reed, crafted as such for thousands of years by the native people that inhabit them. On the Uros Islands, you can shop for crafts from the local people, however you should take care if you wish to photograph them, as is true with most native peoples. It is often customary to offer a monetary offering of some sort if you wish to take direct pictures. If you have the chance, you might consider taking one of the LIMA tours that visits the Uros Islands and Taquile Island. The sailing part of the trip will last a few hours, as Lake Titicaca is larger than the country of Switzerland, and the experience of sailing out on it is almost too much to take in, especially if you find yourself on the tour on a whim. You almost have to pinch yourself a couple times to verify that you are not dreaming. When you get to Taquile Island, you must climb a lengthy set of high-rising steps that take you to the top of the island, and yes, the views are stunning. You can tour the island by yourself, and if you are lucky, the native people will be celebrating a special event or festival. It is something to see these people in their colorful clothes, singing and dancing their way about as if you were not there at all. Seeing the ancient Sillustani Burial Towers that were built along the shores of Lake Titicaca is another one of the possible LIMA tours.

Prices listed below are in US$ and are per room, not per person. Overseas tourists are exempt from paying the 19% sales tax which is usually included in the price of the room. However, in order to obtain this discount you will be asked to provide a photocopy of your passport and entrance stamp. A hotel has a restaurant while a hostal doesn't. Apart from that there is very little difference. The prices in this web site are to be used as a guide only. Please check current prices with the hotel when enquiring about room availability. Uros Islands: How to build an Island The reeds' roots are like cork, and they form the base of the island. By February, huge clumps of roots float to the surface. They are sawed into manageable sized blocks; then somebody tows it back or jumps onto it and rows it home. The blocks are lashed together with ropes and stakes driven into the blocks. (The island we were on contained 10 blocks.) The matted roots are 6 ft. thick, and then they are covered with a 3 ft. layer of fresh reeds. It is something like walking on a waterbed! Every 3-6 months they add more reeds as the previous layer mashes down.

☼ LIMA CITY/DOWNTOWN

The city of LIMA is located in the south east corner of Peru, on the shores of the magnificent Lake Titicaca and only 126km from the frontier with Bolivia. At 3,827m in altitude, LIMA is a rather cold and bleak town surrounded by the desolate altiplano (or high plateau). It is not so much a destination in itself but a necessary stop on the way to visit the islands on Lake Titicaca, or when crossing the border to Bolivia.

LIMA is often referred to as the "Folklore Capital of Peru" celebrating numerous fiestas throughout the year and having over a hundred traditional dances. Candelaria Fiesta

During Candelaria Fiesta people from the town and all around the country and from neighbouring contries gather for 2 weeks in February to LIMA. Altogether the fiesta may take for the participatants whole the year sewing their dresses, but acutally it takes one month main time from everybody. That is true because they have to travel far, to have messes when leaving their homes, and again when going back home. And taking apart to premiliary contestes, because it is not possible to only go there, but you have to show your skills and level for knowing all the dances and other necessities.

Languages on Lake Titikaka

From the tour guide to Chullpas de Sillustani, I learned that there are two native languages on Lake Titikaka (the correct spelling). The prominent one is Aymara. However, the Spaniards brought tons of Quechua speakers to work the fields.

LIMA Shopping: Mitts and Hats to match

More shopping in LIMA too ???? Actually we liked shopping at a little pedistrian shopping area. that runs fromthe Plaza de Armas to the Parque Pino. Lots of deals and as in most areas, you get a better price if you buy quanity.

 

Street shops: Good sovenir shopping

Other VTers have written stating that the Lima Street shops are good to go to and where the deals are. I agree with them, but I also want to add that a better deal are the side street shops directly next to the dock where you board the boats to the Uros floating islands. What to buy: Just the same Alpaca wool products, bamboo pipes, trinkets. Not as good a selection as Agua Caliente but a bit cheaper.

 

central market:

The best place you gotta visit if you need to buy somehting is the central market. Here you can find whatever you need...caps, tshirts, jackets, pullovers and so on...and for sure, also the hojas de coca, which was very good for us coming from the "lower level"

☼ LIMA Transportation

Andean Explorer

It is possible to fly (Manco Capac airport in Juliaca) or drive to LIMA, but another option is to take the 'Andean Explorer' from Cusco. 'Andean Explorer' is a luxury (and tourist) train operated by Peru Rail.

 

A Scenic Train Ride To LIMA

The stunningly scenic route through the Andean plains is well worth the full day trip (from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The backpacker service without the meals is affordably priced at $19; however, they don't take pre-reservations for this.

There are 4 basic kinds of public transportation in LIMA-- Buses are cheapest; taxis most expensive; but the other 2 are inexpensive and fun. Moto taxis have a 2-person carriage attached to a motorcycle. Bike taxis are very similar, but pedal-powered and a bit cheaper.

☼ BREIF LIMA HISTORY

LIMA Peru was officially founded in 1668 by a Spanish viceroy, as a result of the discovery of silver mines in the area, but it had already been a most significant place for the Inca people. It was their belief that the Inca Sun God, Manco Capac, was born from the waters of Lake Titicaca, from which he rose to begin the storied Inca Empire. Capac would center this empire in Cusco, but you can understand the importance of LIMA and Titicaca as the sacred origin of the Inca people. As for the Spanish, LIMA would originally be named San Carlos de LIMA, due to then Spanish king, Charles (Carlos) II. Much like the Spanish did throughout the rest of the Americas, they began to preach Christianity to the natives, and subsequent churches would soon follow. These churches remain to the present day, figuring as just part of the LIMA tourism scene. But, people do not plan LIMA vacations to relish in the impact of the Spanish. LIMA tourism is alive and well mostly because people come to see and interact with the surviving native cultures of the Aymara and Quechua civilizations, and surely Lake Titicaca is a main draw when it comes to LIMAs tours.
